Mr. Xie Zhenhua and Ms. Catherine McKenna, both Vice-Chairs of CCICED, invite you to participate in a High Level Roundtable on Global Governance and Ecological Civilization they will co-chair in Brussels on the morning of 20 June 2018, with a lunch to follow. The purpose of the Roundtable is to examine how acting on synergies among selected global environmental agreements could lead to improved outcomes globally and nationally. This is a matter of concern for China and others who desire to fully meet global green goals in a timely fashion.
Under the leadership of Ms. McKenna and Mr. Xie, CCICED has initiated a Task Force on Global Governance and Ecological Civilization that will work during 2018 and 2019 on three Special Policy Study topics: China’s Contributions to Global Climate Governance; Post 2020 Global Biodiversity Conservation; and Global Ocean Governance. The Brussels Roundtable will be linked to these three topics.
A discussion paper identifying some key possible synergies and approaches will be circulated to all Roundtable participants two weeks before the event. On 19 June the team leaders responsible for each of the three Special Policy Studies will convene for a daylong preparatory session in which priority synergies will be discussed and a brief prepared for use at the Roundtable.
On 20th June, Roundtable participants will be invited to present their views and from the ensuing discussion, recommendations will be produced. The results of the Roundtable will be of direct value in the formulation of policy recommendations to China’s State Council and its leaders. Ultimately, we hope the outcome will be useful to global agreements concerning the three topics and implementation of the SD 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development globally and nationally. The Roundtable results also will help to shape future work of CCICED.
